Down By The River

Down By The River

DBR, or "Down by the River," is a new southern rap group that represents what rap music has been missing. Coming "Straight outta the C-port" of Savannah, Ga., emcees Masi, OJ, Smith and Mal-ski are as talented as they are diverse. Hailing from different areas and backgrounds, the artists found a surprisingly natural bond after a chance meeting in a home recording studio brought them together in early 2012. After a few impromptu recording sessions produced the energized "On Da Reg" and the impressive "C-port back," it was clear that the foursome had a strong connection on the mic and the group "DBR" was formed. Based on compelling real-life topics that range from life in the new south to the struggle of the underdog, the thoughtful lyricism and the competent messages found within the groups' songs really set them apart from the rest. An eclectic mix of driving drums, southern swing rhythms, and dark synths, the mood is sky-high one minute, borderline morose the next. Confident, cocky, and brash here; melancholy, low, and resentful there, the varied rap styles and cultures of the group's members is an interesting amalgamation that is reflective of their generation's issues and attitudes as a whole.
