SSS (aka Sam Smith, former drummer for Portland indie band No Go Know) has been making recordings on his own since 1999, but 2010's "This and Not That" marks his first "official" release as a solo artist. It is on this album that his style of poly-rhythmic layering, loops, and heavy drum grooves all come together with a new found sense of melody and song structure. As a drummer first and foremost, rhythmic elements play a central role with drum set, piano, and electric bass creating a solid interlocking foundation while catchy melodies drift in and out on Hammond organ and with a chorus of melodicas. The songs on the album are varied somewhat in style, and the songs themselves often dip and dive, taking unexpected left-turns, sometimes totally collapsing into chaos before somehow drifting back together.
