As the title suggests, Enoch Smith, Jr.’s third disc focuses on pop music while extending the “misfit” theme established on his previous 2011 disc. A self-described misfit, the pianist and composer says that he adopted the appellation after enrolling at Berklee College of Music in 1996 and noticing how different his musical upbringing and thinking were to his fellow classmates. Two of the most significant differences were that Smith didn’t read music when he got accepted and he didn’t start playing piano until his was 14. “I grew up playing in church. I had really great ears,” he says. “But because of some of those differences, I realized that my approach to music – conceptually – was coming from a different place.” Indeed, Misfits established Smith as a talent to watch thanks to his bracing originals and sublime interpretations of songs by the Beatles, Duke Ellington and Sade.
