What You Have To

What You Have To

Mabel. A name that's easy to remember, hard to forget. The same thing can be said of the band. Recently at the forefront of the Madison, WI rock scene, Mabel has relocated to Chicago, packing new venues and taking the city by storm. The group has constantly been turning heads since their formation two years ago, and turned up the heat in the spring of 2003 with the debut of their first full-length album, What You Have To, released to popular and critical acclaim. Mabel's dynamic live shows and undeniable appeal have not only brought shows with prominent indie bands Mates of State, Kid Dakota, and Legends of Rodeo, but increasing endorsements with reviews in Madison's Ricks's Cafe, Chicago's Sidewinder Zine, and several 'picks' in The Onion. What makes Mabel so compelling? Simply put, the sound. Mabel combines a rich blend of musical styles into songs which flow beautifully together, yet no two songs sound alike. Where rock music has become stagnant and predictable, Mabel offers an experience delightfully different, without losing the grit and attitude so important to the rock genre. The five members all come from different musical backgrounds, ranging from classical to punk and everything in between. Coed vocals blend powerfully and soar over a mixture of raw guitar, intricate piano, and the band's claim-to-fame cello. Combined with melodic basswork and dynamic drumming, Mabel gets under your skin in that great, can't-get-this-outta-my-head-and-don't-wanna, sort of way. With one successful album under the belt, Mabel is destined for greatness by polishing its already addictive sound while delving into even more ambitious musical territory.
