ibeji

ibeji

“Ibeji” means “twins” in Yoruba. This is a concept album looking at Brazilian music and American Jazz as twin children of Mother Africa, separated at birth and sent off to grow up in distant parts of the world. Now reunited. American Jazz greats Rufus Reid & Tim Horner join Paul to play Brazilian compositions in a Jazz style, and Brazilian Jazz greats Duduka da Fonseca & Nilson Matta join Paul to play American compositions in a Brazilian style.  In addition powerful originals recombine elements from both traditions in fresh ways. Co-producer and co-arranger Joel A. Martin plays piano on the entire recording, and there are guest appearances from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jaimoe (co-founder and drummer of the Allman Brothers) and cello virtuoso and multiple Grammy winner Eugene Friesen. The result is fresh, interesting, and very listenable! American Jazz musician Paul Lieberman apprenticed in Brazilian music in New York City before spending two years living and touring with Airto and Flora Purim and their all-Brazilian band, then moving to Rio de Janeiro for the next four years where he worked with many of Brazil's greatest singers and musicians.
